REVIEW: 2003
"Some day in 21st century, our marginal sea were suffered the attack of enemy’s plane suddenly. For safeguarding our motherland and territorial integrity, our one-five-two air force team receive the order and launched a soul-stirring air battle with the enemy."
Vertical shoot-em-ups comprise a vast percentage of the GameKing's line-up and there seems little doubt that most make use of the engine first witnessed in this built-in 1942 Clone.
Despite the absurd claims of the "story brief" and indeed the game's title that the events taking place in game are happening in the 21st century, everything from the design of the planes to the music pays homage to Capcom's classic top down shooter.
You pilot your little Bi-plane through nine stages, blasting enemy waves and collecting power-ups until the familiar landing strip of your aircraft carrier appears to give you a chance to refuel. Enemy sprites are nice and varied with small nuisance ships crumbling beneath your guns and bigger jets taking considerably more hits to vanquish for visually represented bonus points.
Powerups are limited to two types: faster bullets and a wave gun type effect while, as in 1942, pushing the B button makes your ship perform a visually appealing and useful loop-the-loop during which time you cannot be hit by enemy fire.

Graphically, the game features varied backdrops that thankfully these are always kept simple enough to see what is going on on the field of action. Infinite continues, no bosses and generous restart points mean that this won't provide much of a challenge before you see its perfunctory end screen but there is always the test of 1CCing the game.
As a built-in game, 2003, is a nice little shooter that hits most of the 1942 sweet spots and is ideal for a quick, convenient blast even if it is a little on the easy side.
Score 7/10
